Portland, South Portland and Biddeford area makes top ten list for employment opportunity

PORTLAND, Maine – This month, Forbes named the Portland, South Portland and Biddeford area as the sixth best cities for professional opportunity this spring. In an article, which identifies communities experiencing growth in employment and economic opportunity, Forbes named the Portland region as one of the top ten places to seek employment with the area’s net employment outlook at nineteen percent.

“While the impact of the country’s recession is not fully behind us, making Forbes top ten list for employment opportunity is good news not just for Portland but for the state as a whole,” stated Mayor Michael Brennan. “As a community, we have been and will continue to focus on developing policies like our Economic Development Plan and regional economic efforts with neighboring communities to spur economic growth and support the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives here.”

Citing recent growth in certain high wage and high skills sectors including software development and pet pharmacy and IT services, Mayor Brennan continued, “More than 40% of the state’s personal income, state employment and total state product comes from the Portland region and it is absolutely crucial that at both the state and local level, policy makers develop and adopt policies the help support growth and the quality of life Portland is famous for because Portland and Maine’s economic success go hand in hand.”

Several multi-million dollar major projects lay on the horizon for the City of Portland including the $100 million development of Thompson’s Point, the $33 million renovation of the Cumberland County Civic Center, the $100 million mixed-use development by the Federated Companies in Bayside and several renovation and redevelopment projects at local hotels including the Portland Regency Hotel and Eastland Park Hotel. “From an active working waterfront to vibrant downtown to a burgeoning creative economy, the City of Portland is an attractive community for employers and employees alike and designation’s like this one help us in our efforts to spread the word that Portland is a great community to live and work.”
