To obtain a new driver or business license for a taxi, livery or tour:
Applications are available for printing on this site or in the basement hallway of City Hall (rack next to bulletin board).
Fill out the application completely. If you need assistance please contact 207-756-8377. Incomplete applications will be returned.
DRIVERS – Mail completed application, application fee and two 2”x 2” full face color photos to City of Portland, Taxi Administrator, 1001 Westbrook St., Portland 04102 or deliver to the Ground Transportation booth at the jetport, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Fees are listed at the top of the application.
BUSINESSES - All taxi and livery vehicles must pass a compliance check as set forth in the ordinance. Compliance checks are done by Ground Transportation at the Portland International Jetport. Please call 879-1903 to schedule an appointment. The completed application, application fee, copy of registration, current insurance certificate and current meter seal certificate should be delivered to the Ground Transportation booth when the compliance check is completed. Please include $21 for each background check on owners, business partners or managers who do not apply for a taxi/livery driver’s license.
Licenses may take up to two weeks to process.
The taxi administrator will contact you when your license is ready. Your State of Maine driver’s license will be required for identification at time of pickup. Business licenses will be issued to the business owner. License pick up is at the Ground Transportation booth at the jetport, Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
You will be notified by certified mail if your license is denied. You will also receive instructions for filing an appeal. Application fees are non-refundable.
Jetport permits are issued by the jetport and have additional requirements and fees. We are currently not issuing new jetport permits for non-reserved taxis.
Any outstanding debts, judgments or tax payments in arrears that are due and payable to the City of Portland must be paid prior to issuing any license.
