Biotechnology Growth

Greater Portland hosts the largest biotechnology industry cluster in Maine, with Portland as its hub. The infrastructure to support this industry has been growing and maturing since biotech came to Portland in the 1970s. It encompasses a diverse range of companies, world class research institutes, a highly educated workforce, experienced business incubation, available investment capital, and financial incentives offered at the state and local levels.

The Economic Development Division is working to expand the industry here, seeking to recruit biotechnology companies that are interested in a better quality of life for themselves and their employees. Relocating to Portland, Maine is the answer for companies wishing to lose the traffic and commuting headaches; find lower costs for owning or leasing space; enjoy the great arts, culture and cuisine of Portland; take advantage of the extraordinary natural resources for outdoor recreation in every season, and still be able get to Boston in just two hours. Portland’s zoning has been modified in order to allow biotechnology in a variety of areas throughout the city, including the mixed use Bayside district adjacent to downtown and the Portland Technology Park, as well as industrial districts.
