Health & Human Services Committee Meets January 10 to Discuss Goals for Upcoming Year

The City Council’s Health & Human Services Committee will hold its first meeting of the year on January 10 at 5:30 PM in Room 209. The Committee will discuss its goals and work plan for the upcoming year and also receive a presentation from City staff on Chapter 10 Fire Code revisions and shelter zoning.

Councilor Belinda Ray, Chair of the HHS Committee, is eager for the Committee to get to work.

“Improving our shelter system continues to be a priority of mine,” she said. “As chair of the committee, I'm excited to work with City staff, the community, and my fellow councilors to establish a new facility here in Portland. Our shelter staff does exemplary work, but they've had to operate out of a substandard facility for too long.”

She went on to say, "in a properly designed building, we'll be able to better serve the community. Hot meals, a day room so that people don't have to pack up and vacate the shelter every morning, on-site wrap-around services -- these are all things I know our staff would love to offer, but a new facility could have that capacity if that’s what the community wants.”

Addressing city zoning so that there are more possibilities for locating a new shelter is the first step in the process for the Committee. The initial discussion about shelter zoning on the 10th will be followed by a public hearing on the topic at a second meeting on January 24.
