Woodford Street Sewer Separation Project Public Notice

The Department of Public Works would like to update you on the status and activities regarding the above referenced project. This project will separate the existing combined sewer in Woodford Street to a separate sanitary sewer and stormwater drain. There is a great deal of work planned for your area and I will use letters (either mail delivered or hand delivered onto your front doors) to keep you informed.

The contract has been awarded to D & C Construction of Rockland, MA.

As a reminder, this project is being done to help the City with their efforts to prevent combined sewer overflows into Back Cove. The sewage will be directed to the East End Treatment Plant while the storm water will be discharged into Back Cove. The project calls for a combination of new sanitary sewer and sewer laterals, new storm drain, new catch basins, and new pavement.

Specifically, the project will include:
1. Providing approximately 1,825 LF of storm drain piping and associated manholes;
2. Providing approximately 1,015 LF of sanitary sewer piping and associated manholes;
3. Providing catch basins and catch basin laterals along the extent of construction in Woodford Street;
4. Providing new sanitary sewer laterals from the Right of Way, or as indicated on the plans, to the main along the extent of the construction;
5. Replacing approximately 1,550 LF of water main and associated fittings and services (Portland Water District Contract) in Woodford Street and Arlington Street;
6. Replacing approximately 350 LF of gas main (Unitil) within Woodford Street;
7. Repairing disturbed driveway aprons, sidewalks and esplanades in Woodford Street;
8. Installing new sidewalk on Woodford Street between Melrose Street and Clifton Street on the south side;
9. Providing new base and surface course pavement in all roadways impacted by the construction;
10. Providing new full depth gravels for full-depth reconstruction in Woodford Street

Paint indicating underground utilities is being applied to the street. The contractor will be completing a layout of scheduled manholes and catch basins for portions of the project. In doing so you may find wooden stakes in your front lawn. Please do not remove them as these are used to indicate the location of underground utilities and new structures in the street.

Portions of the road where the contractor is working will be posted as “No Parking” as necessary when construction activities warrant it. This is done to protect your vehicles and to make moving around the site safer for the contractor as there will be a lot of construction activity.

The contractor will begin work each morning at 7:00 AM and typically works until 5:00 PM. Extenuating circumstances or emergencies may require alterations to that schedule.

The contractor will be stockpiling necessary materials for the project within the triangular city parcel at the intersection of Woodfard Street and Clifton Street.

You will have access to driveways on a daily basis but may be asked to move your vehicle out of the driveway if the contractor will be working right in front of it for the day.

You will begin to see traffic control devices in the form of variable message boards and physical signs. We ask that you observe and respect the flaggers and any traffic directional changes as we progress.

It is intended that any school bus pickup and drop off remain at their current locations.

Trash and recycling pickup for all streets will remain the same on Mondays. Please make sure both trash and recycling are at your curb by 6:00 AM.

The project will begin next week at the intersection of Baxter Boulevard near Vannah Avenue and work through Burrows Park (Sundial) to proceed up Woodford Street to Forest Avenue.

Mr. Peter Dubail of Public Works will be serving as the City’s Inspector and will be onsite daily. I apologize in advance for any inconveniences that this construction may cause and thank you for your patience during this period. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself at 874-8840 or catch Peter onsite during the day.
