Dr. Kolawole Bankole Named New Public Health Director

The City of Portland is pleased to announce that it has named Dr. Kolawole Bankole, MD, MS, MBA, as the city’s new Public Health Director. After an extensive search process, Dr. Bankole, who has been with the City’s Public Health Division since 2004,  was chosen to fulfill the role. Most recently, Dr. Bankole served as the Family Health Program Manager. Prior to this role, he served as the Minority Health Program Coordinator. Since 2007, he has also served as an Adjunct Faculty of Public Health & Policy and Management at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service. 


Dr. Bankole will be overseeing the Public Health Division, which consists of a $2.7 million, 38-person municipal health department that includes four programs: chronic disease prevention, family health, health equity and research, and infectious disease. 


"I’m pleased to officially welcome Dr. Bankole as our new Director of the Public Health Division,” said Dawn Stiles, the City’s Health and Human Services Director. “Dr. Bankole has had a long career in public health and is well-known and respected in the community. I’m excited to work with him in this leadership role.” 


Dr. Bankole received his MD from the University of Benin, College of Medicine, Benin City, Nigeria. He is a U.S. Medical Board Certified medical professional. He has an MS from the University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service, and an MBA from the University of Southern Maine, School of Business.
