City Proclaims March 10 to be ‘Konbit Sante Day’ in Portland in Honor of 15th Anniversary

In honor of Konbit Sante’s 15th anniversary, Mayor Ethan Strimling and the Portland City Council are proclaiming March 10, 2017 to be ‘Konbit Sante Day’ in the city of Portland. Mayor Strimling and Councilor Jill Duson will present the proclamation to Konbit Sante officials tonight, Friday, March 10 at a celebration event at 5:30 PM at Ocean Gateway.

Konbit Sante is a Portland non-profit organization that has been working to strengthen the capacity of the Haitian health system in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, one of Portland’s Sister Cities, since 2001. Cap-Haitien, Haiti and Portland, Maine have been building bridges between our communities as Sister Cities through this partnership since 2003.

By these communities of people working together to share knowledge, build infrastructure, and provide human and material resources, whether during the regular daily health work of normal times, or through extreme challenges such as the devastating earthquake and cholera epidemic that struck Haiti in 2010, Konbit Sante and its partners have been able to improve health care for many in the Cap-Haitien community.

Many people from Portland, Cap-Haitien, and indeed a growing number of people from other parts of the US and the world, have contributed faithfully and generously, and in many different ways, to sustain and make this work successful.

On Saturday, March 11, Konbit Sante Cap-Haitien Health Partnership, the Muskie School’s Graduate Program in Public Health, and the World Affairs Council of Maine are hosting REFLECTIONS ON GLOBAL HEALTH:  Exploring Konbit Sante’s Partnership to Improve Health in Northern Haiti. The event will provide an overview of the growth and evolution of global health practice, the context and challenges of working in Haiti, and an in-depth look at the unique work and approach that Konbit Sante has developed during its 15-year partnership with four Haitian health facilities serving northern Haiti.
