Portland School Budget Vote Set for June 13

School Budget Validation

The City Clerk’s Office announced today that Portland voters will be asked to approve the Portland Public School’s budget in a citywide referendum on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.  Maine’s School Administrative Reorganization Law requires all school districts to hold elections for approval of their budgets. The budget must be approved by a majority of voters. 

The Portland Board of Public Education on April 11 voted to recommend to the City Council an FY2018 school budget of $105 million. The City Council approved the budget at its May 15, 2017 meeting. 

Absentee ballots for the June 13 school budget referendum are available in the City Clerk’s office, 2nd floor of City Hall. Office hours of the City Clerk/Registrar are Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. for any resident wishing to register to vote or vote by absentee. The Clerk’s Office will be remain open until 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 8, 2017 only. This will be the last day for absentee voting in the City Clerk’s office.  Sample ballots are on the State’s website at

Voters will be asked: 

Question 1.

YES/NO -- Do you favor approving the Portland School Budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the latest City Council budget meeting? 

Question 2.

YES/NO -- In the event that the Portland Public Schools receives more state education subsidy than the amount included in its budget, shall the Portland Board of Public Education with the consent of the City Council be authorized to use all or part of the additional state subsidy to:

  • Increase expenditures for school purposes in cost center categories approved by the Portland Board of Public Education; and/or

  • Increase the allocation of finances in a reserve fund approved by the Portland Board of Public Education; and/or

  • Reduce taxes by decreasing the local cost share expectation, as defined in 20-A M.R.S. section 15671-A(1)(B), for local property taxpayers for funding public education as approved by the Portland Board of Public Education.

All qualified residents of the City of Portland are encouraged to vote. All local polling places will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on June 13. 

Based on your residency, you must vote at your polling place.
