A $5.65 million reconstruction project on a portion of Forest Avenue in Portland will begin on Monday, August 14th.
The location for this reconstruction, known as Woodford's Corner, will be on Forest Avenue between Pleasant Avenue and Lincoln Street and extend up Revere Street to Deering Street. Forest Avenue carries an average of 27,000 a day in this vicinity.
Work includes the replacement of old infrastructure including sewer, storm drainage, gas lines and new electrical work for a future lighting project. Once the utility work has been completed, the roadway and sidewalks will be rebuilt with new signals installed. In order to expedite the project, multiple crews will be working five or six days a week, with most of the work taking place during overnight hours.
Work will be carried out in phases and continue into the 2018 construction season. Utility work on the south side of Woodford Street will be done in phase one. Phase two will include work northerly of Woodford's Corner. Once phase two is complete by late November, the project will go into winter suspension until early April. When the project resumes, any unfinished utility work will be completed. Phase three will then begin with full roadway reconstruction. The work also includes rehabilitation and upgrades to Pan Am Railways railroad crossing, crossing gates and signals.
The contractor will make every effort to minimize impacts to pedestrians. Access to area businesses will be maintained but parking on the street may not be available if work is scheduled for that area. Pedestrians may need to cross the street for sidewalk access. Motorists are advised of potential delays and to seek an alternate route.
Due to the aging infrastructure, this area is in need of revitalization. The corridor does not adequately serve this growing area of Portland. This project will provide improved movement for pedestrians; provide consistent bike lanes for cyclists and improved traffic flow with the reconstruction of the roadway along with new traffic signals.
Shaw Brothers Construction of Westbrook will perform this $5.65 million project.
