Bedford Street to Become One-Way Starting May 14 for Duration of Summer Construction

traffic alert

Starting on Monday, May 14th, Bedford Street will be converted into a one-way street to accommodate construction activities related to the Bedford Street Sewer Separation project. At least one lane will be maintained for traffic traveling from Deering Avenue to Forest Avenue on Bedford Street. Bedford Street will be closed to traffic approaching from Forest Avenue. West-bound Bedford Street traffic will be directed to use Falmouth Street as a detour.

This traffic configuration will stay in place for the duration of work on Bedford Street from May 14th through August 31st. Access to The University of Southern Maine campus facilities on Bedford Street will remain open for the duration of the work. Portland METRO bus service will be following the detour route on Falmouth Street. Please go to for more information on the adjusted route and bus stop locations during the project.

As a reminder, this project is intended to help the City with its efforts to prevent Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) into Back Cove as part of the City’s long term CSO reduction agreement with the EPA.
