Finance Committee Holds Public Hearing on Responsible Contracting Proposal

NEWS ALERT

The Portland City Council’s Finance Committee will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, October 10 at 5:30 PM in Council Chambers on Mayor Strimling’s responsible contracting proposal. The Mayor is proposing an amendment to strengthen the City’s purchasing policy.

It would:

  • Require the payment of prevailing wages for building contracts that are funded by municipal funds,

  • Require contractors who are awarded a municipally funded construction project to participate in a registered apprenticeship/job training program, and

  • Add additional opportunities for contractors who treat their workers well to earn points toward the possible awarding of a contract if they provide - health care for their workers; Unemployment, Workers Comp and Social Security (or the equivalent); OSHA 10 Training; and if they have a clean record on wage violations.

Each of these proposals will be taken up individually. The Mayor’s memo with full proposal details can be found here: https://www.portlandmaine.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/6748?fileID=38178.
