City & ReVision Energy to 'Flip the Switch' on Ocean Avenue Solar Array on December 18

The City of Portland and ReVision Energy will celebrate the completion of the solar array on the Ocean Avenue Landfill on Tuesday, December 18 at 9 AM.  The array, comprised of 2,816 solar panels spread over 4 acres, will produce 1.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year – enough to power City Hall and Merrill Auditorium.

Mayor Ethan Strimling said that “the Ocean Avenue project demonstrates that the City of Portland is serious about its commitment to a future powered by renewable energy.  Building this array sets a powerful example for other local governments around the state.”

Councilor Spencer Thibodeau, Chair of the Sustainability and Transportation Committee noted that “completing the solar array on the landfill represents an important step for the city as we work to achieve our goals of running on 100% renewable energy by 2040 and reducing our carbon emissions 80% by 2050. It is a great way to set the stage for our climate action planning process that will get underway in early 2019.”

Councilor Justin Costa, District 4, said “ I would like to thank City staff, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and  the team at ReVision Energy for their outstanding work. This project, along with other improvements, are making our landfill safer and our city more sustainable.”

This project is one of several renewable energy projects designed to reduce Portland’s carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. Earlier this year the City constructed a 23 kW array at the Riverside Golf Course and a 475 kW array on the roof of the parking structure at the Portland Jetport.  The Jetport array is the largest roof mounted solar facility in Maine.
