Developer Pulls Portland Waterfront Hotel Proposal

NEWS ALERT

The City of Portland announced today that the development team Fisherman’s Wharf Portland, LLC has submitted a request to the Portland Planning Board to amend its current application for a conditional rezoning at 184 Commercial Street. The amendment eliminates the hotel use component from the development proposal.

“After many discussions with the Bateman family, I’d like to thank them for taking this important step, as we did not think a hotel use on the waterfront side of Commercial Street was compatible with our working waterfront,” said City Manager Jon Jennings. “This change will go far in addressing one of the major concerns we heard from the fishermen of our working waterfront. I also want to thank City staff for the work they have done and continue to do to make the working waterfront viable for generations to come.”

Following the first meeting of the Waterfront Working Group (WWG), City staff is proposing a zoning change to prohibit conditional or contract zones in the Waterfront Central Zone (WCZ). The proposal is consistent with the goals and recommendations of the City’s recent Comprehensive Plan that emphasize the importance of the working waterfront in Portland. The proposed amendment will be discussed at the second WWG meeting on January 17 at 3:00 PM and will be presented at the Planning Board’s January 22 workshop at 4:30 PM.

Jennings concluded, “the proposed zoning amendment would take the uncertainty out of future development opportunities along the water side of Commercial Street. I look forward to discussing this proposal with the WWG at our next meeting.”
