Community Development Week - Thursday Spotlight

Today's Community Development Week Spotlight Event features Catholic Charities and ILAP, two organizations that partner together on the Immigrant Legal Services (ILS) program, providing legal services to assist New Mainers.

Catholic Charities & ILAP

Catholic Charities Maine (CCM) and the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) partner on the Immigrant Legal Services (ILS) program to assist immigrants, refugees and persons who have been granted asylum with qualified, affordable immigrant legal services. We help clients “improve” their immigration status by gaining residency, work permits, citizenship, and reunifying with family. ILS services include: assistance obtaining documentation/evidence; identifying relevant immigration statues, regulation and laws for each case; and assisting clients to complete complex federal immigration forms. All services are provided in the language of the client. Immigrants must have legal status or work authorizations in order to improve their income and financial security. By helping them to gain this, ILS expands immigrants access to economic opportunities in the City of Portland. The program’s goals are to provide immigrants with affordable, high quality immigration legal services and to scale up capacity to meet the growing demand.

Success Story

PN, 79, and her husband EM, 80, were farmers in Burundi before they were forced to flee their home 2008. RIS Services for Older refugees has done much in the past 11 years to support their adjustment which was complicated by poor health, depression, and separation from family. This year ILS has secured US citizenship for both PN and EM, and we are moving forward with seeking legal means for them to reunite with loved ones left behind.
