Tree Planting

The Forestry Division is responsible for conducting and overseeing planting within all public spaces citywide. This includes parks and city facilities as well as the right-of-way along the edge of city streets.

If you are interested in having a tree planted in Portland, please see the available programs outlined below.

Planting season takes place in May and June.

CITY-FUNDED Tree PLANTING

We are able to provide a limited number of free tree plantings by request each year. Unfortunately, the number of requests for city-funded trees exceeds our yearly planting capacity. We do our best to fulfill each request as quickly as possible, but this can take multiple years. Priority is given to residential areas with the greatest need for additional trees. Requests made by groups of residents from the same street or neighborhood are welcome and encouraged.

Co-Op Tree PLANTING

This is the quickest and most flexible of our available tree planting programs. In this program, a resident will select and purchase a tree at one of our participating nurseries, and we take care of the pickup and planting. Co-op requests are always guaranteed for the current planting season and this is the only program that allows for setback planting on private property. To learn more, please visit the Co-op Tree Planting page.

Memorial & Gift Tree PLANTING

A tree may be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one through this program. Trees are planted in select public parks and spaces within the City of Portland, and pricing generally ranges between $200 and $300 depending on species. Please note plaques or monumentation of any kind are prohibited at these planting sites. For more information or to register please visit the online Gift and Memorial Tree registration form.
