Police to Hold Community Conversations Regarding Body Camera Pilot Program

The Portland Police Department will hold two community conversations next week to discuss the body camera pilot program. The first meeting will be held Wednesday, March 21 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM at Deering High School in the Cafeteria, and the second meeting will be held Thursday, March 22 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM at the Portland Public Library in the Rines Auditorium. Chief Sauschuck gave an overview of the program to the City Council during its February 21 workshop. It is expected that the pilot program will begin in the spring with vendor selection and purchasing this summer and then full implementation later this fall.

The pilot program will be paid for using $26,000 of repurposed U.S. Department of Justice JAG grant money. The $400,000 needed to implement the full program is included in the City Manager’s Recommended FY19 CIP budget request, which the City Council will take up for approval in April.
