On Sunday, October 7, 2018, at 12:00 Noon, the annual Memorial Sunday Ceremony will be held by the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association, Portland Fire Department and the South Portland Fire Department, at Forest City Cemetery, located off Lincoln Street, in South Portland.

This service was first instituted in 1892 by the New England States Veteran Firemen’s League, as way of remembering ALL deceased members.  Since 1911, it has been held at the Forest City Cemetery lot of the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association, where a monument was erected in 1913.

The tradition continues here, which also honors twenty known Portland Fire Department members and two South Portland Fire Department firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1903.

A profession of firefighters lead by Bag Pipers and the Portland Fire Department Pipe & Drum Band marches to the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association lot and monument site.  Members of the organizations will speak, followed by the reading of members who died in the line of duty.  The service concludes with the laying of floral wreaths at the monument and prayers by fire department chaplains.
