[ARCHIVED] City Streamlines Annual Tax Billing Process

portland news

The City of Portland is streamlining its annual tax billing process to create greater efficiency and lower overall costs. Beginning with the FY20 tax bills, which will be mailed in early September 2019, residents will receive a single annual tax bill with two payment coupons. In previous fiscal years, the City incurred significant additional staff, supplies, and postage cost by mailing two separate bills semiannually. Streamlining the process will save the City at least $15,000 annually. Tax information is available to the public at any time by visiting this link.

Because of the transition, the annual tax bills will be sent in early September this year, rather than the traditional August mailing date. The mailing dates will return to normal next year. First half tax bill due dates will be adjusted accordingly, with payment not due until October 18, 2019 compared to the standard mid-September due date. The March 20, 2020 second half bill due date remains unchanged.

“We’re continually looking at ways in which we can streamline our processes to enhance customer service, interact more easily with the public, and save taxpayers’ money,” said City Manager Jon Jennings. “Through our research, we found that most municipalities only send one tax bill. That information, combined with the cost savings and reduction of staff time, led us to implement this change.”

Complete details on the change will be included in the September tax mailing. In the first year of implementation, a reminder postcard will be sent to residents in February 2020.
