Fire and Ice

PORTLAND, Maine  --  Five Portland Firefighters helped organize and run the Fire & Ice Burn Survivors Camp held January 17 - 21, 2020. Twenty-One young burn survivors between the ages of 10 and 18 attended the camp from all over the Atlantic region, Texas, and New Brunswick, Canada.

Activities include skiing, ice skating, snow-tubing and indoor go karts. There was no cost to the campers, or their families, which was held in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. All costs are covered by donations, including COPECC.

Portland Fire Captain David Petruccelli states, “The biggest thing we offer these young people is a chance for time with their peers, meeting and bonding with others who have had similar experiences. This camp helps in the emotional recovery and growth of these resilient young people.”

Joining Portland Firefighters in the organization and staffing the operation of the camp were Firefighters from Scarborough, Maine; Boston, Massachusetts; Fairfax, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Moncton, New Brunswick; and a nurse, along with adult burn survivors.
