Rapid Rehousing Program to Serve 40 Individuals & 25 Families

portland news

The City of Portland’s Rapid Rehousing Program will soon serve an additional 40 individuals and 25 families thanks to a recent funding award from Maine Housing. The City is partnering with Amistad to operate the first program, identify the 40 individuals, and secure stable housing with follow up services to ensure the housing remains successful. The other program will be operated by the City at our Family Shelter, which is designed to support and provide follow up services to 25 families.

The City’s Social Services Division staff along with Amistad and Maine Housing have started working collaboratively to identify the list of individuals and beginning to enroll clients.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to bring forward a program that has such broad collaboration within the community,” said Aaron Geyer, the City’s Social Services Director. “These programs have an opportunity to positively impact more than 100 individuals experiencing homelessness. We’d like to thank Maine Housing for their vision and leadership in working to reduce the impacts of COVID-19 on those experiencing homelessness as we head into the winter months.”

Brian Townsend, Executive Director of Amistad offered, “Amistad’s programs are based on human connection and relationships. This emphasis allows our staff to be effective in supporting individuals with making difficult choices and navigating tough circumstances as they work toward life transformation. This emphasis also supports dynamic and effective partnerships within this community. We are thrilled to be joining two very committed and energized partners--the City of Portland’s social services team and MaineHousing--in delivering peer support-based supports that, for 40 individuals, will result in the transformative reality of having a home.”
